We have all heard of meditation and everyone who does it seems to be in some sort of trance or peaceful state, however we can only imagine that its for some higher spiritual beings or maybe people who don’t have 3 kids to get to school on time and therefore can sit around cross legged all day. If you have ever tried to meditate you will find that its not just about sitting still, and if you have been having assumptions that when people meditate they go into some sort of other worldly trance and state of bliss and you cant understand why its not happening to you, then let me clear a few myths up for you.

Meditation is for everyone and there is nobody who cannot meditate on some level or other.

Chances are you are doing anyway on a daily basis but just not aware of it. Awareness is the key word here. If you are daydreaming you are away with the fairies and in a complete trance like state, you may be driving and not realise how you even got there but obviously you didn’t have an accident, you drove with safely, but you would have been switching to auto pilot, which we all do from time to time. Usually when we do something very repetitive what we can literally do without thinking. And that the whole point, doing something without thinking, we finally let our brain take long needed rest and just get on with the job. When we think too much it takes away our natural ability to do things.

One very simple step and guide to meditation is to do breathing some deep breathing and counting your breaths as you inhale and exhale. The reason this is such good practice is two fold – the first reason is that by concentrating on counting your breaths you do not allow your brain to start thinking about anything else. Just the act of counting 1,2 ,3 4, and inhaling at the same time is enough to divert your concentration. Secondly its good for us all to breath deeply and we really do not do it enough. If you were to stop yourself at least 5 times a day and just be aware of your breathing you will be surprised at how shallow your breaths are. Taking in deep breaths, helps us to oxygenate our blood thus give us more energy and in the long term can aid weight loss.

So there you go, both meditation and breathing is of the utmost importance to keeping fit and happy.
