While some would view the holistic approach to treating illness and disease contrary to the wisdom of conventional medicine, quite the opposite is true in most cases. In fact, most conventional physicians view a patient with a desire to work to improve their overall health as refreshing.

A majority of holistic medical approaches can complement traditional treatments. Here are some things that you can do to integrate holistic healthcare into your life:
~

Holistic care means focusing not only on a specific sign or symptom, but working to treat the mind, body and spirit of any patient who is willing to seek answers for what ails them. Most holistic treatment options are based on nature, and include few chemicals that are foreign to the human body. Here are some ways that you can begin to integrate holistic medicine into your life:
~

Holistic care treats the whole person, rather than just specific areas of the body. The primary difference between holistic care and conventional medicine is that holistic practitioners try to use naturally occurring substances to treat illnesses and disease instead of manufactured chemicals. Additionally, there is a focus on alternative therapies including chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage and even psychotherapy when appropriate. Here are some things that you might not realize about the many holistic techniques available today:
~

Have you found yourself to be little more than a passive participant in your medical care? If so, you are definitely not alone. One alternative that will make you an active participant is holistic medicine.

With holistic medicine, care is centered on the individual and not just the results of lab tests. The belief that medical care must depend on the individual often seems lost in the realm of medicine. By selecting holistic care, you are taking control of your medical care and will find that your overall well-being improves. Here are some approaches that set holistic medical care apart:
~

Are you tired of your doctor telling you that the symptoms you are experiencing are just in your head? Well, it turns out that they could very well be right! This is not to say that every unexplained medical problem is an unresolved mental disorder. Instead, it is the idea that emotional issues can potentially lead to physical problems within the body. For this reason, the holistic approach includes treatments for both the mind and the body. Here are some examples of how holistic care can work to make you feel better than you ever have:
~

If you are an open minded person who would like to be more involved with your medical care, then holistic medicine offers you the ability to get involved and stay involved. Many holistic treatments require a significant contribution from the patient, in order to achieve the greatest results. Here are some examples of holistic treatment options that you may not have heard about:
~

Sometimes, it is easy to forget that not every mind or body is alike. This is where conventional medical practitioners fail their patients in some cases. And, it is why holistic and natural medical care is gaining popularity.

Careful observation of a patient is critical when you want to address their specific needs and symptoms, and holistic practitioners take the time to learn about their patients, and not just what the medical books say about the human body. Through coordinated holistic care, you will find that your body and mind respond to treatment a lot faster than with conventional medical care. Here are some of the options open to you when you choose to use holistic medical care:
~

Holistic medicine is not mystical, and it is not mysterious. In fact, holistic medicine is much more real than many people realize. In order to increase the positive effects of medical treatment, it is necessary that the treating practitioner get to know the patient as an individual. Observation and discovery can often uncover potential problems before they begin and help the practitioner to address any specific problems experienced by the patient. Here are some of the ways that holistic care can benefit you:
~

Do you suffer from a chronic health problem, but you just can’t seem to find a treatment that works? You might be a good candidate for holistic medical care.

Believe it or not, there is a lot more to medical treatments than conventional medicine would have you believe. There are many forms of alternative medicine like homeopathic medications, massage therapy, aromatherapy and nutrition counselling. Each of these approaches focuses on you as an individual so that you can have your needs addressed in a way that is comfortable for you and that works to alleviate not only the symptoms, but the root cause of your problems. Here are some ideas to consider:
~

Holistic medical care is becoming a buzzword among thirty somethings who are looking to play a more active role in maintaining good health. Gone are the days where an apple a day was the only way to stay healthy. Those who have started to enjoy the benefits of holistic medical care will tell you that there is much to be said for preventative care that keeps the mind, body and spirit in excellent condition.

There is no right or wrong way to use holistic care, as it can be integrated with conventional medical care or it can be used in place of conventional medical care. The wonderful thing about holistic care is that there is definitely something for everyone. You have probably already turned to holistic medicine at some point, but you may not realize this now. Here are some examples of what holistic care involves:
Now that you know a little more about holistic care, hopefully you will consider giving it a try. If you are unable to locate a holistic practitioner in your area, consider doing an internet search to see if there is someone in a nearby town who could work with you. There’s no time like the present to start working towards a healthier you.
~

Holistic medicine is no longer a taboo practice that people do in secret. Rather, today’s holistic practitioners are proud to be able to offer their patients a wide variety of treatment options that help to develop the mind, body and spirit. Many conventional physicians are willing to help patients integrate alternative treatment options into their standard medical treatments. If you are considering taking a holistic approach to your health, as your doctor for a recommendation or get started by looking through your local phone book.

Because holistic medical care incorporates the individual’s specific needs and concerns it tends to be a much more effective approach to medical care. Certainly, it can also be integrated well with conventional medical treatment plans. While you may not be comfortable with all alternative treatment options, there is definitely a lot of possibility for improving your life one step at a time when you open your mind to the idea of holistic care.

When death occurs something in the human machine fails to assimilate the materials placed at its disposal, and therefore, the energy needed for normal functions becomes non-existent.

When death occurs something in the human machine fails to assimilate the materials placed at its disposal, and therefore, the energy needed for normal functions becomes non-existent. A doctor can certify the cause of death as one of many diseases affecting given organs of the body, but he cannot certify with any degree of accuracy when and how the body first became prone to the disease, and why disease should appear in one person and not in another.

It has been proved, by observation, that disease shows itself in the aura before making itself felt in the organs of the physical body; it can be seen as dark patches, or as a mottled condition in the vari-coloured radiation surrounding the individual, proving that some disorganization of the electrical field also takes place

Evidences that medical science is gradually coming to realize the electrical nature of man’s constitution can be observed by the part that electrical therapy plays in the modern hospitals and specialists’ consulting-rooms. As yet, the majority of doctors regards only the effects of electrical treatment as shown by the response of the pysical organs; they work on the theory that certain electrical rays stimulate some bacteria and destroy others.

A few scientists have branched out into the theory that it is man’s own electricity that reacts upon himself, and by the study of the aura are advancing slowly into a new theoretical idea of the cause of disease, an idea that has been aided by the invention of the Kilnascreen and the verificatin of clairvoyants that disease is shown in the aura before the onset of an illness, that the condition intensifies during illness and fades in convalescence, but leaves behind it a permanent imprint on the electrical field.

The use of the words electric and magnetic in this information is purley analogous, for the aura is not electric in the ordinary meaning of the word as applied to comerical and domestic electricity. There is a certain difficulty in finding terms which are easily understood by the reader, which will convey the idea of something so intangible, and little understood, as the human aura.

Aura and food

The aura is defined as a magnetic field of vibration which surrounds every person, in the same way that light surrounds a lighted candle or perfume surrounds a flower. The aura is oval or egg shaped and varies in colour depending on the vibration which radiates in all directions from the human form. Spinach contains iron in such a form as to be easily assimilated by a body lacking in iron, and therefore lacking a substance needed for the manufacture of essential energy. A person lacking in the needful mineral matter becomes anemic, easily tired and indulges in lengthy periods of sleep, during which time the minimum amount of electricity is needed for the functions of the human machine. An excess of organic substances will create what may be termed short circuits, or explosive tendencies in the individual such as hysteria, apoplexy, and short temper.

We are accustomed to relegate periods of depression, headache and indigestion to digestive causes. We do not think sufficiently deeply to discover how and why certain food affect the flow of our energy. It has been scientifically proved that the human machine can be maintained in a state of perfect health by a simple diet of uncooked vegetables, fruits, cereals, nuts and barks. All of these, upon analysis, reveal balanced quantities of easily digested mineral matter, whereas cooked and manufactured foods contain less quantities of these important substances. Dietetic research has proved that a low state of energy results from such diets.

We are, therefore, forced to the conclustion that it is not merely the amount of food which gives us energy, but the quality of the food and the time allowed for its assimilation, not merely into the bloody stream, but also into the electrical force from which our evergy is derived. If it were food, air and water alone which maintained our life, we could safely consider that life could be prolonged indefinitely.

Can psychics be good for your health?
A phenomenon known as remote viewing, which claims to use psychic powers to ’see’ what is invisible to the naked eye, may have an intriguing role to play in healthcare
Remote chance: Lucy Pinney asks remote viewer Daz Smith to help visualise the final months of her late ex-husband’s life Photo: Jay Williams
Three months ago, Twitter hosted its first scientific experiment and invited users to help demonstrate the existence of psychic powers. Professor Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire, recruited 7,000 volunteers via the social messaging service to investigate “remote viewing” (RV). A remote viewer is a gifted individual who claims to be able to “see” events in the past, present and future, and identifying distant locations.
The psychology professor, famed for his mass-participation experiments, which explore the curious science of everyday life, travelled to a mystery site in the UK, whereupon he sent a Tweet. Participants were asked to pinpoint his location by selecting it from a line-up of five photographs. As only 15 per cent of people correctly predicted Prof Wiseman’s location – despite a 20 per cent probability – he pronounced RV to be a hoax.
Related Articles
Historically, however, governments have not been not so quick to condemn. During the Cold War, the American military spent $20 million (£12.2 million) on an RV project, conducting “psychic spying” missions against the Soviet Union for two decades. In 2001, the Ministry of Defence also investigated the potential of remote viewing, but the outcome is unknown.
Recently, Hollywood has got in on the act. In The Men Who Stare at Goats, to be released in 2010, George Clooney plays a soldier who uses his paranormal powers to track down the Iraqi enemy.
So far, so spooky – and frankly unbelievable. Or is it? The NHS is involved in an ongoing trial to establish whether RV has social and medical applications.
Andrew Usher, dean of the British Institute of Homeopathy, and a (non-clinical) partner in an NHS practice in Scotland, is working with a GP to determine if RV can save lives. Usher’s Med RV project uses a team of remote viewers around the world who try to detect illnesses that have been missed by conventional scientific and medical procedures.
The scheme has been running for just over a year. Usher, the complementary medicine consultant at Dunbeath Surgery in Caithness, says it is too early for conclusive results. “I’ve worked on 30 cases but I need at least 100 before I can make statistical correlations. RV is never 100 per cent accurate, so it could only ever be a supplementary form of data acquisition.”
Up to six remote viewers at a time are involved in a single case. They are not given any information about the patient – whose consent must be sought – other than a case number.
“One of our most impressive cases was that of a patient with bad migraines,” says Usher. “He’d been for a CAT scan, which was clear. However, the data from remote viewers showed a head with a lot of darkness, and something circular at the back of it. When we gave him an MRI scan, it turned out he had a benign brain tumour.”
Usher began looking into RV after reading in the British Medical Journal about how faith healers could benefit patients in intensive care.
While Usher says remote viewers have had surprising success in picking up on “big pathology” such as growths, he is realistic about the limitations of involving medical non-professionals. “It is hard for remote viewers to pick up cellular structures and changes,” he says. Training doctors to be remote viewers has also proved problematic, as “they tend to second-guess diagnoses”. Of more practical use are those who claim to be so proficient in RV that their skills are used by the police.
According to Usher, Britain’s most celebrated remote viewer is Daz Smith, an affable `thirtysomething’ from the West Country, who has worked on a dozen Med RV cases. He is also a volunteer for Find Me (findme2.com), a psychic missing-persons agency in the US.
Smith has used RV to visualise GPS co-ordinates and exact details of locations and crime scenes – helping police to track down lost children, as well as human remains and criminals on the run. He showed me letters of thanks for his help in finding the bodies of a missing US Army staff sergeant, and a Kansas suicide victim. “I couldn’t save these people’s lives, but I helped their families get closure on their deaths,” he says.
How is it possible to do this? The answer, says Smith, lies in a programme devised for the CIA by a psychic called Ingo Swann, who developed techniques for stimulating creativity and accessing the subconscious. “Everyone is mildly psychic and can learn to do remote viewing,” Smith says. “The training – which is lengthy, like learning a martial art – teaches you to interpret subtle gut impressions. But it’s like everything: to be world-class you do need talent.”
Smith invited me to try RV. He showed me a sealed envelope containing someone’s name. He asked me to tell him what I could about the person. I was to listen to my subconscious and scribble down my impressions. Within half an hour, I came up with a description of a slim, dark woman with children. Smith revealed that he’d really been asking me to view myself in a year’s time. I felt flattered, but manipulated.
Smith asked his internet-based team of remote viewers to help me with a specific question. Before my ex-husband died two years ago, I had discovered that he’d been unfaithful. I wanted to know if he’d had any illegitimate children. I waited more than a week for the reply. Four remote viewers came up with colourful, jerky impressions: the effect was like reading blank verse. They did not answer my question but they described my husband, scenes from his life and mannerisms with such accuracy that it made me cry.
Earlier, Smith had told me how he’d been approached by a woman whose son had vanished. His team told her that he had drowned – yet she had been hugely comforted. This story had puzzled me: how could it help to be told the worst?
Now I understood. The vivid, highly personal descriptions did help bring closure. So perhaps Prof Wiseman is wrong: in the right hands, RV can work – though it may not give exactly the answer you want.

Massage Therapy
Massage is one of the oldest, simplest forms of therapy and is a system of stroking, pressing and kneading different areas of the body to relieve pain, relax, stimulate, and tone the body. Massage does much more than create a pleasant sensation on the skin, it also works on the soft tissues (the muscles, tendons, and ligaments) to improve muscle tone. Although it largely affects those muscles just under the skin, its benefits may also reach the deeper layers of muscle. Massage also stimulates blood circulation and assists the lymphatic system (which runs parallel to the circulatory system), improving the elimination of waste throughout the body. Massage therapy eases tension, stiffness, pain and enhances well-being. It also improves breathing and improves circulation as well as having an overall relaxing and soothing effect.

aromatherapy
The effects of massage are cumulative and patients should look to undergo a course of massage treatments to bring the most benefits. Regular massage can have a strengthening and toning effect on the whole body, and helps prevent unnecessary strains and injuries that might occur due to excess tension and any resultant structural weaknesses. Depending on the type of massage given, it can stimulate or calm the nervous system, and can therefore help reduce fatigue and leave the patient relaxed, or leave them with a feeling of replenished energy. At its best, massage has the potential to restore the individual physically, mentally and spiritually.
Massage is mainly used for musculoskeletal problems and related pain, as well as stress-related conditions and to promote a general feeling of wellbeing. Massage is also being used for pain relief during childbirth and labour.
Massage is inadvisable if the patient has certain medical conditions. It is important the practitioner is aware of any medical condition the patient has prior to treatment.

HOW TO READ THE CRYSTAL

The Crystal itself is a clear pellucid piece of quartz or beryl, sometimes oval in shape, but more
generally spheroidal. It is accredited by Reichenbach and other researchers with highly magnetic
qualities capable of producing in a suitable subject a state analogous to the ordinary waking
trance of the hypnotists. It is believed that all bodies convey, or are the vehicles of, a certain
universal magnetic property, variously called Od, Odyle, etc., which is regarded as an inert and
passive substance underlying the more active forces familiar to us in kinetic, calorific, and
electrical phenomena. In this respect it bears a position analogous to the Argon of the
atmosphere. It is capable of taking up, sympathetically, the vibrations of those bodies or
elements to which it is temporarily related. But of itself it has no activity, although in its still,
well-like, and calm depths it holds the potentiality of all magnetic forces. This Odyle, then, is
particularly potent in the quartz or beryl, when brought into activity by the intention of the seer.
It produces and retains more readily in that form the various images communicated to it from the
soul of man.

Reiki as a clinical intervention in oncology nursing practice

Oncology nurses and their patients are frequently on the cutting edge of new therapies and interventions that support coping, health, and healing. Reiki is a practice that is requested with increasing frequency, is easy to learn, does not require expensive equipment, and in preliminary research, elicits a relaxation response and helps patients to feel more peaceful and experience less pain. Those who practice Reiki report that it supports them in self-care and a healthy lifestyle. This article will describe the process of Reiki, review current literature, present vignettes of patient responses to the intervention, and make recommendations for future study.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) lists Reiki as an energy therapy in its classification of complementary and alternative therapies. Energy therapy is defined as one that focuses on energy fields within the body and electromagnetic fields, which focus on fields outside of the body. Reiki is a Japanese word that is a combination of two characters (Rei) meaning universal and (Ki) meaning life-force energy. Reiki is an ancient healing art involving the gentle laying on of hands, well suited for nurses who provide hands-on care for patients in so many different ways.

Philosophy of Care

As in nursing, Reiki therapy is one of practicing the art of presence and compassion. Reiki is not a religion but a philosophy of care that is described by the following principles taught to Reiki practitioners.

* Relate to patients’ core or essence, not personality.

* Listen without judging patients’ actions.

* Be willing not to know or understand the “why’s” associated with patients’ presentation.

* Let go of viewing patient’s responses following Reiki treatment as the practitioner’s personal achievement (Rand, 1998).

Nurses often recognise the importance of entering and leaving another’s “space” or energy field and the impact that the presence of one person can have on another. They understand the pattern of patients’ energy and use as they care for patients and are licensed to provide treatments that often involve touching patients as a part of the care they provide. In doing so, nurses witness the effects of changes that occur in a patient’s energy field during routine nursing care, such as hanging an IV medication, taking a pulse, or teaching about self-care. Reiki practice takes these ideas a step further by acknowledging and working with the vital energy (ki) that patients and nurses possess and merging it with the universal healing energy (rei) through a specific intention of assisting the healing process.chakras

Reiki Treatment

The serious study and use of subtle energy in nursing and other disciplines is receiving increased attention in the literature and in clinical practice (Engebretson, 1998). For example, the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energy and Energy Medicine hosts leading scientists for an annual meeting to discuss and disseminate research findings about energy medicine. Reiki, a type of energy healing, assists nurses in working with the body’s energy to achieve or restore a state of greater balance and harmony. Mikai Usui, a teacher from Japan, developed specific treatment procedures in 1920 after he studied and meditated about healing practices (Lambert, 2000; Petter, 1997; Usui & Petter, 2003). Trained practitioners use a light touch, placing hands in a systematic way to connect the universal life-force energy with a person’s own innate power to heal. Reiki is performed with the recipient fully clothed and either lying down or sitting in a chair. A full treatment may be as long (or as short) as needed; however, it usually lasts 45-90 minutes. A full treatment generally consists of placing the hands in 12 positions on the head and front and back of the torso, and some practitioners also add the knees and feet. The recipient can be awake, asleep, or even unconscious when receiving a treatment. During Reiki treatments, Reiki energy is made available to assist in the body’s efforts to reach a greater equilibrium (Miles & True, 2003). Generally, Reiki is accepted as low risk, and contraindictions and adverse events have not been reported (Miles & True). Recipients report a variety of individual responses to their experiences of Reiki energy, which are included in this article.

Learning to Be a Reiki Practitioner

Anyone can learn to become a Reiki practitioner through a process that combines new knowledge, practice with the form, and understanding of a Reiki session and a series of attunements or initiations that enhance the flow of Reiki energy within a practitioner, administered by a Reiki master or teacher. The process often produces a positive shift in the self-image of the emerging practitioner.Training is divided into three levels (I, II, and III). Initiation to each level celebrates the beginning of study, not the attainment of all necessary learning (Miles, 2003). The training for Reiki level I is a combination of didactic and clinical experience that focuses on the physical process of hand positions used by the practitioner for the delivery of the gentle Reiki energy. Reiki level II adds emotional and spiritual healing attunements with the use of specific symbols that allow the practitioner to offer long-distance Reiki. Reiki level II training increases the practitioner’s ability to listen to her or his own inner voice or intuition. Although some teachers will combine levels I and II together in a weekend workshop, the authors require students to practice doing self-treatments and treatments of others for a period of three to six months before moving from level I to level II training. The third level of Reiki training prepares the practitioner as a master and then as a teacher, usually by having the practitioner work closely with a master practitioner over time (Lubeck, Petter, & Rand, 2001; Miles, 2006). Continuing education is recommended for all practitioners in the form of Reiki sharing or Reiki practice groups. At the authors’ institutions, this involves a combination of giving and receiving treatments as well as opportunities to discuss research with a mentor and colleagues.

Plant Watching

Everything living has an aura, even plants. If you find it difficult to read your own aura, practice on a tree or plant that is not moving in a breeze. Sit in front of a potted plant.

Choose a spot near the top or at the base of the plant and let your eyes go out of focus. Look beyond the plant, as if you’re focusing on an object hanging from a branch or leaf. You should begin to see the white inner-aura of the plant. Keep your focus on the white aura and try moving your perception around to the opposite side of the plant.

You might wish to try placing a small lamp behind the plant to illuminate its leaves and branches. Set the light behind the pot so you cannot see the bulb; make sure the lamp does not hurt your eyes in anyway. This illumination can help trick your physical sight to focus on the slight reflection of the light. As you stare at the reflection, you might notice it grow wider and soon begin to realise that are looking at what is a colourful aura.

Remember this is a plant, so it may not have the colour variations that a person or animal might have. But you should be able to see if the plant is healthy or if it lacks nourishment or is beginning to develop other physical problems.

Animal Watching

luna rug

This technique can be difficult, especially if your pet does not want to sit still.
However, it is a great exercise to practice your technique on an independent subject.

Choose a place around the head of the animal, and let your eyes go out of focus. Use the same techniques you may have used in the mirror exercise. Try moving your perception around the animal’s body and notice the change in colour variations.

Quick Practice Ideas

The great thing about practicing aura reading is that you can do it just about anywhere.  The following is a few suggestions you may want to try. Simply use the same techniques as previously described and open your inner eyes to all the energy around you.

If you are attending a meeting or presentation at work, try focusing on the speaker – you may notice sudden changes of colour in their inner aura.  They may feel more comfortable speaking about a particular area of their presentation, but as they move into slightly unfamiliar territory, their aura will reflect the drop in confidence.

Everyone likes to stand or sit at the beach and watch the waves roll into shore. Take a moment to watch the waves, focus on the outline of the top of the water, or the white foam of the wave as it curves over and crashes. The first time I tried this exercise, I was amazed at the electricity my inner vision perceived. It was truly a beautiful sight.

Hold an object (a car key or a crystal) for 10 to 15 minutes. Visualize your energy imprinting itself onto the object. Sit the object on a table and focus on the energy residue you have left behind. The colour you see should match the emotion that you imprinted on the object.
